40% of the CO2 emissions in Denmark stem from the construction industry, and if Denmark wants to live up to the Paris Agreement by 2050, then this issue has to be addressed.
This project addresses a central element in the fight against waste material and scarce resources by collaborating with Gladsaxe Erhvervsby on improving their platform bygcirkulaert.dk – a platform facilitating the sale of used construction materials.
The current value chain is optimized for the linear economy and the circular principles are far more expensive, meaning stakeholders lack incentives for implementing it. In order to create awareness and increase motivation for sustainable practices, we developed a CO2 calculator to implement in the platform.
The CO2 calculator can be implemented into the platform with minimal resources from the client (it is currently in the process of being implemented). The CO2 calculator will have the ability to highlight the value of reuse from an environmental standpoint, while simultaneously create focus on CO2 as a value token when deciding on materials for construction projects. Additionally, it will make the CO2 impact more tangible by comparing it to more familiar and comprehendible measurements, such as commercial flights.
The project was executed through a holistic engineering system approach that allows the considerations for the solution's impact on both macro, meso and micro level to be incorporated. Continuous user and client involvement was utilized and contributed to iterations in testing and development.
