By using a biologically inspired design approach, we research the shock absorption properties of the pomelo peel and utilise the structure of this peel as inspiration to improve the structure for typical materials used for impact protection for drinking glasses. The varying density as well as hexagonal structure of the pomelo peel was found to be more than three times more effective for shock absorption compared to the structure of corrugated cardboard.
Biologically inspired design as a design approach is an innovative way of thinking, where you consider knowledge on biological phenomenons and apply the functions when solving technical challenges. It thereby fosters creative thinking and innovative solutions.
